Event Details
WALK CLUB is a collective exploration of the distinctive and ever-changing sounds of our surroundings — an invitation to deepen our connection to place. On each artist-curated soundwalk route, be guided through listening activities and creative reflection that turn our attention to the sonic environments around us.
Sunday 16 August, 10am
ft. Flora Wong
where // Kalinga Park, Wooloowin
meeting point // Kalinga Park, near the Bertha Street Carpark
This walk is curated by Dots+Loops’ own Flora Wong, whose musical practice includes outdoor improvisations, making field recordings, and collaborative co-composition. We’ll be meeting at Kalinga Park for a walk along both sides of Kedron Brook. Expect to hear the sounds of the lorikeets that make use of the nesting hollows in the parks’ many mature eucalypts, children playing in the playground, the gentle trickling of the brook, and possibly a train passing overhead on a rail bridge. After the walk, Flora will facilitate a collaborative co-composition of a work to be performed on the spot by her duo Voltfruit with multi-instrumentalist Luke Cuerel and special guests. Attendees who feel comfortable with structured improvisation are welcome to bring their voices and instruments to also participate in the performance.
Route and Accessibility
Meet at 9:00am in Kalinga Park, near the Bertha Street carpark. If the carpark is full, there is plenty of street parking on Bertha Street and surrounding streets. The park’s main carpark off Diggers Dr can be busy on weekends. The nearest train stations are Toombul (a 1.2km walk) and Eagle Junction (a 1.5km walk). The nearest bus routes are 320, 321, and 327.
We will be walking for about 2km over 60 minutes, with several pauses along the way. The route includes gentle slopes along well-maintained grassy/off path areas.
What To Bring
Wear comfortable close toed shoes, please bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat, and maybe a snack.
If you’re like, bring a field-recording device (like a ZOOM), a notebook or sketch pad, or any other creative listening/reflecting tools you would like!
What Is A Soundwalk?
A soundwalk is a walk with a focus on listening to the environment. Canadian composer, radio artist and sound ecologist Hildergard Westerkamp defines a soundwalk as “… any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment. It is exposing our ears to every sound around us no matter where we are.”
This term was first widely used in the 1970s in Vancouver by Westerkamp and other members of the World Soundscape Project, but we recognise that many similar practices exist, including First Nations practices of walking Country and listening to Country (eg. dadirri). Soundwalks offer a way for us to re-engage with our surroundings, and can foster a sense of community and belonging, as well as inspire and generate material for art-making.
Tickets
Participation is FREE, but please make sure you register, as places on each walk are limited.

Acknowledgement of Country
Dots+Loops WALK CLUB takes place on Jagera and Turrbal land. We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners and pay our pay respects to Elders past and present. First Nations communities have been creating and sharing music, art and culture here for thousands of generations, and we recognise the important ongoing contributions they make to our music and arts scenes. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
