李三腳威震地獄門 The Dragon Lives Again 1977 M (90mins)

In the wake of the 1973 death of martial arts superstar Bruce Lee came one of cinema’s most curious subgenres: Bruceploitation. Fuelled by unscrupulous producers and audiences still hungry for movies starring the late icon, Bruceploitation took stuntmen with a passing resemblance to the late star, gave them new monikers (including Bruce Li, Bruce Leh and Dragon Lee) and pumped out scores of films — some estimates go as high as 200 — throughout the 1970s.

A major highlight of this bizarre film cycle is the knowing and often hilarious The Dragon Lives Again, starring ‘Bruce Leung’ (real name: Leung Choi-sang) as Bruce Lee himself. Stuck in hell after his untimely death, he is determined to return to the land of the living. To do so, he must battle through the forces of the underworld, which for some reason include James Bond, Dracula and at least one ‘The Godfather’. Bruce thankfully has help from a small coterie of allies, including Popeye the Sailor, in one of cinema’s most joyous and creative affronts to intellectual property law.
