This soundwalk is curated and led by Magandjin-based experimental artist Yvette Ofa Agapow, whose practice is firmly rooted in local DIY practices. She will guide us on a walk through Woolloongabba, Coorporoo and East Brisbane that explores the transitions between natural, suburban and industrial spaces, and facilitate a performance of a Pauline Oliveros’ Sonic Meditation following the walk. Expect to hear the sounds of traffic, birds, bugs, people, music, planes, trains, running water, along with other surprises!
Route and Accessibility
Meet at 4:00pm at Deshon Street Park, Woolloongabba, at the park map sign at the corner of Deshon St and Turbo Dr. There is a small carpark and street parking available on Atherton St. The park is approximately a 300m walk from a bus stop serviced by the 200, and a 1.2km walk from both Buranda and Coorparoo train stations.
We will be walking for about 4km over 40 minutes. The route is mostly flat with gentle slopes; some parts of the route will include grassy/off-path areas as well as narrow footpaths. There may be loud traffic noise during some parts of this walk.
What To Bring
Wear sturdy close toed shoes, please bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat, and maybe a snack.
If you are able, please bring a fully-charged smartphone with the ability and sufficient storage capacity to record and playback audio — we will record the walk on our phones in its entirety as we walk in silence, and these recordings will be used as part of the Sonic Meditation. You may bring a musical instrument or soundmaking object if you wish, but keep in mind that you will need to either carry it with you on your walk, or make arrangements to store it in your own or a companion’s vehicle during the walk. The Sonic Meditationperformance will be recorded.
If you’d like, bring a field-recording device (like a ZOOM), a notebook or sketch pad, or any other creative listening/reflecting tools you would like!
What Is A Soundwalk?
A soundwalk is a walk with a focus on listening to the environment. Canadian composer, radio artist and sound ecologist Hildergard Westerkamp defines a soundwalk as “… any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment. It is exposing our ears to every sound around us no matter where we are.”
This term was first widely used in the 1970s in Vancouver by Westerkamp and other members of the World Soundscape Project, but we recognise that many similar practices exist, including First Nations practices of walking Country and listening to Country (eg. dadirri). Soundwalks offer a way for us to re-engage with our surroundings, and can foster a sense of community and belonging, as well as inspire and generate material for art-making.

Acknowledgement of Country
Dots+Loops WALK CLUB takes place on Jagera and Turrbal land. We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners and pay our pay respects to Elders past and present. First Nations communities have been walking and listening to Country for thousands of generations, and we recognise the important ongoing contributions they make to the creation and sharing of art, stories and culture on this land. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
Dots+Loops exists for all members of the community, regardless of gender identity, sexuality, ethnicity or economic background. Our shows are explicitly safe spaces, with no tolerance for bigotry, racism, queerphobia, sexism, misogyny, or ableist behaviours or attitudes.
